Abstract
We investigated the frequency of seven platelet antigens in Korean. The platelets were obtained from random 339 healthy blood donors at Red Cross. We performed a mixed passive hemagglutination(MPHA) test using indicator sheep RBC with anti-IgG applied for detection of platelet- specific antigens of donors. The expression frequencies of platelet- specific antigens found were Zwa(PIA1) 100 %, Zwb(PIAZ2) 1.2%, Baka 79.6%, Yuka 1.8%, Yukb loo%, Naka 94.7% and Siba 20.9 %. These frequencies are similar to Japanese and Mapuches Indians, but different from Caucasians. We also analyzed the expression frequencies of antigenograms combined with seven antigens. The most common antigenogram type was a Zwa+ Zwb- Baka+ Yuka- Yukb+ Naka+ Sib2- (type A). Its prevalence was about 55.8% of the total study. The second type (16.8%) was only changed from Siba- to Siba+ in the type A. The third type(15.9%) was also only changed from Baka+ to Baka- in the type A. In summary, though the expression of platelet antigens in Koreans had some differences from Caucasians, it showed similar patterns in comparison with the other oriental races. Also we could suspect that Siba and Baka easily induce platelet posttransfusion immunization in Korea.
